Just picked up a sweet older Rans Rocket and wondering the best way to determine its age.
It has the 1 1/2" tubing and is burgundy(or darker red) in color. all SRAM 7.0 parts and parallax hubs, 24 speed, older seat with angled water bottle holders and square mounting style(pre radloc).
I am guessing 1998 to 2000 but looking for something more definitive.
I do have a s/n on the bottom bracket... only 4 digits that I could read. Pretty heavy paint there so not sure if there are more and it does say Taiwan below the numbers. Would there be only 4 numbers?
Any help or info would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Is the color the same as the one at the following webpage? http://phred.org/~alex/bikes/rocket.html

In 2000 the Rocket came in a color they called "Ice Red", which was a darker red than the bright red on most Rockets. Not sure about the serial number. I have never seen a RANS with just a 4 digit number. They usually have ten numbers. The first two are model, next four are manufactured date, and the last four are units made. The number RK01030014 would be for a Rocket made in January 2003, and it would be the 14th unit manufactured. I do not know when RANS started using this numbering process. I had a 2003 Rocket and which had the 10 digit serial number on it.

Thanks John for that reply and info.
Yes it is the darker red of the site you attached. A pretty sparkle burgundy.
I will look harder at the bottom bracket for the extra numbers/letters. As I said the paint fills in alot of it but I will look closer. So far the last 4 are 0952.
It really is a fun little bike!

Update: I have looked really hard at the bb area and it is not possible to make out any other numbers or letters..too much paint. After doing a little internet searching I am thinking it is a 2000 model. It has silver Alex DA-16 aero rims which came out in 2001 on the 2" Rockets along with all Sram goodies other than a Shimano RSX ft der.
My curiosity is satisfied. Now to ride it more.. if we ever get decent weather!
