Crickets? Really?

I guess it is time to either answer my questions myself or quit asking...

You will get many more responses if you post the question on BROL. This forum is mostly inactive.

We have just started shipping Rifles, so some feedback should start coming in.

I have mostly been entertaining myself.

I ordered one today. (although I am not thrilled with color selection, some fool will think I am a UT fan - egads)

Is there no optional custom colors like FlyingLaZBoy did with his Xstream? I know RANS is doing a Rifle in a custom Color for John S. wife's Rifle. Of course that maybe a special case since it is family.

There is an entire rainbow of custom colors available for an upcharge. I was going to go with the regular colors and just complain a lot. This was a better and happier option.

Here in Michigan State territory, U of M colors are strictly frowned-upon, but that is one pretty frame!

I thought U of M colors where maize and blue? The dark blue and orange on that Rifle look like the colors of the Fighting Illini to me.

It must be my monitor that turned the orange into a dark yellow. Doesn't look very 'orange-y.'

Probably your monitor. I brought it up on 4 different monitors (I'm an IT guy, I do not look at 4 monitors at home. I'm not that big of a geek) and it showed orange on all 4. Who knows with computer graphics. Maybe Rat Rider will let us know the actual colors. Now the part bins in the background look very yellow on my screens.

I know one thing that sure is a gorgeous paint job. RANS really has great paint jobs. I went to their rally in 2009 and Randy showed us the factory. The powder coat booth they use for their planes is also used for the bikes.

I believe this was the initial target. They whiffed on the blue IMO. But I like it nonetheless. (I have no affiliation) Frame is supposed to land at my shop this weekend.

They got it pretty close. Bike looks to be slightly brighter blue. U of I colors below.

It's much more a darker orange than I thought from the pics. It is very nice and nicely packed. This pic is not really a very good representation, probably due to the flash. Quite nice, nonetheless.

I am very nearly finished. I have ordered some snooty parts, which haven't arrived. (I have also been on a 4 day tour in the hill country) I may just throw some stuff on it to ride it.

When completed, pics will pour forth!

Well the first 40 miler is in the books. WINDY, WINDY! Difficult to make too many observations after only one ride. However, I am sure that I need a head rest - ordered from AeroDon. Bike was not as rough riding as I had anticipated. Actually, it was very pleasant. I suspect it has something to do with the seat. About the seat - I was very concerned about the hoagie. I was never a hoagie/euromesh guy. Neither seat was long enough. I believe this one may be a winner (it is XL size). Again, only one ride, but none of the issues I experienced in short order on previous hoagie attempts reared their ugliness.

The bike rode with aplomb. I don't know if I expected otherwise, but it went down the road like an old friend. (I rode a RANS F5 previously, as well as many other hiracers) About the only other thing I looked for was the boom. It did not flex noticeably; I watched it for a good while as I was curious.

The only other thing worth noting was my idiot bike mechanic installed the rear brake holders in backwards. He shouldn't be working on ANYTHING after midnight, especially a bike. Naturally the rear brake quit functioning during the ride, as one of the brake pads was vomited on to the side of the road somewhere. I may fire him...
---------------------
I got impatient with some of the decorations I have ordered, so I just stuck stuff on it to ride it today. The bike is currently cabled in 3 colors -- far out!

No pics until it is whole, but this is the direction of the setup.
durace 10sp barends
XTR carbon rear der
Ultegra fr der
cross top levers (not sure I like these yet)
Zero gravity brakes (this is what I have on it now, but I am not completely happy with this brake on the back of the fork)
SLK triple cranks
Ritchey cheapo lightweight spd pedals
KMC sl chain
i-link cables/housing
RANS adjustable OC bars
Poweron cycling adjustable mast and stem
Easton EC90 SL Fork
11-36 XX cassette
mad fiber wheels

Great that you got it rolling, now send pics, like a nice boy! Also let them know over at BROL, they may start thinking the Rifle is all gunsmoke.

Well, the Rifle has gone from box to Bent. This is an XL frame with an XL seat. Before you ask, 20.9lbs - sans pedals, etc. (I'll bet it would be under 20 with my Lightning double cranks, road cassette, and a reasonably light carbon seat)

The final build included:
Durace 10sp barends
Ultegra fr derailleur
XTR rear derailleur
XX 11-36 cassette
RANS adjustable OC bars
Power On adjustable riser with 80mm stem
Avid spd dial sl levers
Simkins egg fr brake
Ciamillo Zero rear brake
Gator brake and gear cable/housing
Madfiber 700c clincher wheels
Vittoria tires
FSA Slk 172.5 cranks
KMC sl10sp chain
Easton Carbon fork
Velogenesis clamps

The front is 30-39-56. I am not too zesty about leaving it like that. It was (the chainrings/cranks) setup like that on another bike. It would probably be okay if I had a road cassette. Like it is, I fear dozing off in the 56 and approaching a hill. The chain has to be a length that big-big might have a really expensive outcome. I prefer not to have to pay that much attention.

Great looking bike!! How do you like those wheels? IOW, are they worth the expense?

Looking at the Rifle as I venture into the world of recumbent biking. I currently ride a 2012 ICE Vortex, but desire more speed, especially up hills. :)

Perhaps put a 28 instead of the 30 on the front, and use a 32T max rear?

Easier and less expensively said than done. The cassette is a SRAM XX. yeow!

I got them at the end of last year and really haven't ridden them a ton. The time I did have them on my Apache, they made a noticeable difference. I expect to put many miles on them this summer -now that I have two different bikes that use 700's.

Well, I've been a nice boy.

What do you think? 20.9lbs! It would be interesting to put on the lightning double cranks and a road cassette. The bike would be very, very close to the mystical <20 lbs.

You could also remove the 30T granny, as a final nudge, and run a double... Of course, then there's the "real world," where you then add a seatbag, tools and tubes, water, etc.... 8-) Unless, of course, you have "minions" to carry this for you.

C'est très magnifique!

I am curious as to the brake levers, the fork, and especially the seat/headrest.

Very nicely done.

Brake levers are KCNC
Fork is the Johnson carbon
Seat is the M5 Carbon
Headrest is M5 carbon

Weight without the bags was 20lb 12oz

Still getting used to a recumbent two wheeler; been riding a Vortex up until now.

Hey, RAT -- How's that Rifle treating you this summer so far?????

I have been splitting time between bikes this summer. I took the RANS on a tour in MO and all went well. I would like to say I have been riding buckets, but that is not the case. I have been wussing out from the heat far too often. HHH may be here too quickly.

Very happy with my 'rando' Rifle -- will be used primarily for commuting 34 miles round trip via roads, greenways, and dirt roads through a state park here in the Raleigh NC area but also for centuries and weekend explorations. This is my second recumbent, after a Performer High Racer (mid-racer really) learner bike purchased last Summer. No more head-first crashes for this ex-diamond frame rider.

The new bike is lighter, faster, and more comfortable than the PHR. I'm ecstatic.

Build has SRAM 10 speed bar-end shifters on Paul thumbies, TRP disc brakes, 650b wheels with randonneur 37mm tires, and a DIY headrest on a Sparkle White XL frame.

Woot! Thank you RANS!
