Just bought a used Stratus XP to add to my Rans collection. It's about 5 years old and needs new tires. Currently has original Comet Primo 26 x 1.
I'm retired and just use the bikes for exercise. My Sequoia and my wife's Cruz, we use Big Apple and Marathon Dureme tires. 26 x 2, like the cushion ride, and especially always look for puncture resistant tires.

No experience with a Stratus, understand u can go as large as about 1.75, could really use some advice about impact of moving from a 1" tire to the larger sizes on a Stratus XP. Would also appreciate any recommendations regarding a tire choice.

Remember, use is exercise and we participate in local tours maybe 40 miles. Ground is flat, speed not an issue, safety and puncture resistance important...thank you for any help!

Thanks very much

The Stratus LE and some other RANS bikes come standard with Primo Comet 1.5" tires, which would be halfway between the 1" Comets and Big Apples.
1.5" Comets are also available in a kevlar belted version for puncture resistance.
Guessing that the fatter comets would much better meet your stated needs than the stock tires. Depending on your weight, you could have the opportunity to run at less than max pressure for a more comfortable ride with better control.

I've been using 1.75" Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires on my Xstream for the past several months -- they have excellent flat protection, and roll quite nicely -- I can still cruise at 18-20mph as needed. They're a little pricey, but I've been VERY pleased with them.

We have 1.35" Kojaks on my wifes SXP, but I can't seem to find replacements for them, anywhere...

I am not quite sure, but if the XP has 26" (559) tires here are a couple of links.

SCHWALBE has the KOJAK in size 26 x 2.00 (50-559) which rolls pretty fast and is very puncture proof. I have them on my 2005 Stratus XP and they work just fine.

Schwalbe Marathon Supreme HS 382. 26" X 1.6" have been outstanding for me. Never any flats. Rolls easily. Very good traction on wet pavement.

I had multiple flats on the stock Primos and one blew out after only 500 miles. We have some rough roads. I switched to Schwalbe Marathon Supremes. No flats. They handle beautifully but are a bit slower.

The Kevlar Primos seem to be bullet proof too.

I've heard that 2" wide tires won't fit on an XP. Not true? How tight are they?

He has some photos on his blog. Only clear photo of Kojak on bike is of the front fork. Seems to work but it is a close fit. The rear Mavic rim tore on him after installing the Kojak even though previous tires were same size. Rim looks narrow. Wonder if tire was too wide for that rim and exerted a lot of side pressure.

He's using a Rohloff and not a rear derailleur. So no issue of chain rubbing tire. I wonder on a XP with a derailleur if the chain would rub the 2" Kojak when on the largest cog. EDIT: I was wrong about the Rohloff, he did not get it until 2012. He started out with a Shimano Nexus IGH. Same difference, still no cog range to move across and have the chain rub the rear tire. He also ran 2" Big Apples.

The rim looks narrow, but if it is a Mavic 521, it is supposed to be 21 mm inside width. 28 mm outside, according to what I see on the internet. For comparison, a Rhyno lite is 22mm inside width.

It sounds like he rides a lot of miles and tours quite a bit. So it may have been just from wear and tear that the rim tore, especially if he gets on rough roads.

Back in the mid 90's I had a Trek 2120 and back then Trek had their own rims which were named Matrix. I had bad luck with the Matrix rims. I used to do week long tours on the 2120. On the last day of BAMMI (a week long tour through Illinois) coming into the finish I heard my brake pads rubbing the rear rim. I looked back at the rim and it had a large tear in it. Talk about luck having this happen right at the end. Trek covered it under warranty, so they laced up a new Matrix rim for me. Within the first 500 mi. it tore just like the first one. By then I was finished with the Matrix rims. I went to my LBS and had them built me a wheel with a Mavic rim. They used a touring type rim and I never had another rear wheel issue.

Back then the Internet was just getting popular and there were no bike forums, so very little info if a product had a flaw. I found out later that everyone was having issues with the Matrix rims. Trek quit using the Matrix rims. They bought out Bontrager and started using their rims, which seem to be a much better quality than the Matrix rims.

The rims Tihamer had trouble with may have been Mavic 717s:

These are apparently 17 mm wide inside:

If it is a 17 mm ID it very well could have been caused by tire being too wide for the rim.
